"Merely a speculation of the mind": William Henry Fox Talbot and mathematics

A Yorkshire Philosophical Society Lecture by Professor June Barrow Green, Dept of Mathematics & Statistics, The Open University. William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877) is well known today as a pioneer of photography. What is less well known is that he began his scientific career in mathematics and sustained an active interest in mathematics throughout his life, receiving a Gold Medal from the Royal Society for mathematical work in 1838.
